Dr. Sugarman is a third-generation physician who has chosen the Lake Norman area based on strong family roots established by his father Daniel I. Sugarman, MD (now retired) who practiced as a Cardiologist in Mooresville as part of the Sanger Vascular Institute. Dr. Joel Sugarman received his Bachelors's degree in Zoology from the University of Florida where he graduated as Valedictorian. He received his Doctorate in Medicine from Wake Forest School of Medicine in 2000. Dr. Sugarman remained at Wake Forest for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Molecular Genetics as well as for a categorical internal medicine internship. Dr. Sugarman completed his residency training in Dermatology at the University of Missouri (Mizzou) where he received dermatology and dermatologic surgical training within a strong focus on the evaluation and management of cutaneous malignancy. Dr. Sugarman is a former adjunct Assistant Professor with the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Medical School. Dr Sugarman has enjoyed serving the greater Lake Norman Community for over 20 years.
Allison Hanley is a certified physician assistant (PA-C) with Lake Norman Dermatology. After graduating from North Carolina State University, she began her healthcare career as a surgical technologist at Carolinas Medical Center. She then moved to Hamden, Connecticut to attend Quinnipiac University’s Physician Assistant Program which she graduated from in 2010. Allison’s experience comes from her previously working as a plastic surgery PA in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, and as an emergency medicine PA in Cincinnati, Ohio. She joined our practice in 2013. She is a member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants and the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
Melissa Moser graduated from the Physician Assistant program at East Carolina University with a Master's Degree in Physician Assistant studies. Before beginning her education as a Physician Assistant, she received her undergraduate degree in Health and Science from Wake Forest University. She joined Lake Norman Dermatology in 2005 and provides quality care to our patients as a valuable member of our team. Melissa is a member of several professional organizations including the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, the American Academy of Physician Assistants, and the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants.
Betsy Benton is a Certified Physician Assistant and joins Lake Norman Dermatology with over 10 years of medical dermatology experience. She enjoys tailoring dermatological care to all ages, and creating long term patient-provider partnerships to prevent skin cancer and manage acute and chronic disease states.
Prior to joining Lake Norman Dermatology, Betsy has cared for patients across the greater Charlotte area and in Burlington, Vermont where she began her career in Dermatology. Prior to working in Dermatology, Betsy worked in rural Vermont in an urgent care.
Betsy holds a bachelor of science degree in nutrition and dietetics and food science at the University of Vermont and a master's of Physician Assistant Studies from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.
Betsy is excited to increase dermatology care access in the Lake Norman region, and is accepting patients starting in May
